Several Children Hit By Teen Driver & Car Hits Neighbors Home Injury Accident Orting WA Long Edit

May 10, 2011. Orting, WA. Five young children riding in their small battery powered vehicles were hit by a 14 year old driver taking a driving lesson with his father in the 1300 block of Riddell Ave NE. Two of the Five children were transported to the hospital and treated for non life threatening injuries. The father and son were backing out of their driveway when the young driver intending to apply the brakes, pressed down on the accelerator causing the car to speed across the cul-de-sac and hit the children. Still moving at a high rate towards others, the father grabbed the steering wheel. The vehicle missed hitting the others but slammed into the closed garage of a neighbors home damaging items inside and partially breaking through a bedroom wall. The gas line and a water line were also severed. Orting police and fire responded with aid from East Pierce Fire and Rescue. The Washington State Patrol assisted Orting PD with the investigation. No estimate on the total damage loss at this time. The damaged home was deemed unsafe to occupy that night. Utilities were shut off and structural damage did occur.

I'm glad none of the children hit were seriously injured. The kid driving must feel terrible right now even though it was an accident.

Is it legal for a 14 year old to operate a motor vehicle there? I know in Pennsylvania, I had to wait until I was 16 before I could apply for a learner's permit. My dad waited until then to show me how to drive, and we started off in an empty parking lot.

@mattbjrs No on 14. 15 if you are enrolled in a drivers ed class. 15 1/2 if not and you must pass a knowledge test before getting it. Glad no one was killed. Initial tone out reported the car and house had caught fire.
