What's the worst mistake most people make when they start a job search?
Think for a moment about your own job searches and you probably have the answer. I asked this question recently at the ASTD international conference presentation that I was doing, and I got some great answers. All parts of that puzzle.
But the answer is most people rush in to their job search. They dash out their resume. They start telling everybody they need a job before they have stopped to really think. What do I want to do next? What am I most successful doing? What environment do I want to work in?
And it is that homework, that self-assessment, and that research that then makes you able to do a great job search because you can prove what kind of value you offer to specific employers who might be interested in you in places where you can succeed.
So the worst mistake is not to take time to prepare. Yes you need a job. Yes you probably are really anxious to get going. But stop first. Give yourself that time to really think about what is the next place, that I want to work in. That I know I can succeed in because I'm going to use my best talents. If you do that you will be ahead of 90% of the job seekers out there.
You are very welcome!
