Waiting to get within 500 meters before firing is sheer insanity. It's like being within tossing distance of your enemy when using tactical nukes. They'd be going so fast Sisko wouldn't be able to give the command to fire before they had collided with the enemy ship(s). The line should have been more like "Wait until we are within 500 KILOMETERS".

The Enterprise may the flagship of the Federation, but the Defiant is by far the best damn ship in "Star Trek". Nothing can touch that "tough little ship".

@Uselesschris Section 31 had Transport Technology that could Bypass Shields so did the Jem Hadar , they also had long range transports that could transport a person several light years =0
