Info is a rant/mini-review

Just demoing it. It plays more like BC2 than BF2 IMO. The lack of a commander position and the command mode for commander and squad leaders detracts quite a bit from the organized team play. The extent of team play is really following your teammates. Short of organizing a squad of friends beforehand I'm going to say the teamplay is shallow, which is honestly the biggest discernible difference between the last Battlefield games (2 and 2142) and the Bad Company series. It's still fun, just not as much as I had hoped. I'm still a fan of BC though, so it's fine as a game period.

The actual state of the beta...I've run into quite a few matches where people were getting stuck under the ground and glitching off the map or glitching prone and sliding across the ground at super speeds, etc. There are still some graphical glitches in this round but it's probably one of the better ones I've recorded. Needless to say it needs a lot of polish, and I really wonder about DICE's statement that this is actually an older build than the one they're working on in development.

Few quips about the gameplay. Marking still seems roughly the same as BC2. If I recall correctly a DICE dev said they changed the marking system so it would only be active so long as you could see the target. It apparently worked fine through rock and trees in the matches I've been in. Flashlights, hate'em. Whether you're team or enemy it's extremely distracting and I am not a fan of their super exposing and blinding light and glare. Unlocking seems to be linear, not a fan of that and I've never been a fan of that system. I want some options for unlocks at least, but it seems unlocks are completely predesignated and the division between the classes makes it worse. I think perhaps unlock trees may have been a good alternative, at least to keep things interesting.

Sounds are great, nothing to say there. Sounds were great in Bad Company games as well.

Graphics. Glitches, tons of them. Most of them seem to be related to animations. The models seem fine but it looks like someone messed up the animations. Misaligned attachments to weapons, floating people (during sprints and climbing), and the like. There are also some minor texture and render glitches that I've run into like environmental flashing. Otherwise the graphics are great, though some textures are questionable like that of the foliage. The art direction is pretty interesting, almost surreal. It feels a lot like a dramatic war movie cast in mute and cool colors like grey and blue. It isn't so obvious in the trees, and in fact makes those natural scenes bland, but in the tunnels, subway, and actual city the style becomes more prominent. It's actually the strongest in those dim and shadowy environments like the tunnels and subway. It adds quite a bit of character to those sort of scenes; the typically drab color passes actually come out really well thanks to the high contrast in the dark areas. I actually appreciate an art style that isn't going for complete "dark and gritty" or over saturated colors. Not to mention the grey and blue transition very well without blending.

To be prompt, I like it but only in certain areas (because it only exists in certain areas). It reminds me a bit of Killzone 2/3's color grading but it seems pretty unique in itself.

On other tidbits; I have mixed feelings about the web browser menu. While the game seems to alt+tab smoothly the web browser hub feels a bit lackluster. DICE obviously put some thought into it but I don't think it's the smoothest design and it's no doubt disjointed from the game itself. And I doubt there was little consideration for people who don't want to have a web browser open while also playing the game. But honestly, I'm fine with it overall, better than having a separate hub program. Perhaps they could implement it into Origin itself so users can save some resources.

To sum it up: probably going to buy it when it goes on sale (hopefully) on Origin or retailers. Not sure about the value of the DLC that pre-orders get for free but I don't really care about that DLC business anymore; I never buy DLC and I have a feeling I never will.
