That colony died last winter so I haven't yet faced swarming, but appreciate your question. I live on a city lot so will probably encounter it next spring (with luck). Maybe best to recognize swarming is a natural thing. Talk to neighbors and let them know that swarming colonies are at their most docile stage and least likely to sting. My neighbors (two sides and rear) all know I have a hive and seem to appreciate it, so far. Read up on "splitting" large colonies to reduce swarming. Good luck

All colony living things such as honey bees, bumble bees, waspsm and hornets do orienting flights to memorize where their new home is. Very interesting observation! I really know a lot about bees and i wish to start honey bees in the next year or two. The only issue is worrying about the neighbors freaking out when they do their spring swarm! Any ideas?
