Multi-Pedal Ostinatos: Paradiddle

This is the first of a series of videos highlighting multi-pedal ostinatos. In this instalment, I'm playing a paradiddle while alternating each foot between hi-hat and bass drum with each subsequent stroke (it'll make more sense when you see what they're doing). As usual for me, this is a veritable hodgepodge of clips from my practice sessions of various ideas, grooves I've mucked with recently. Please excuse the mess!

Using a static ostinato layer underneath your playing can add a lot of depth, texture, and context to the melodies and rhythms you're playing on top. Moving your limbs between sound sources adds even more depth as it extends the phrase of the ostinato that much longer. This also adds another degree of difficulty as different phrases, time signatures present themselves as well as the balance issue of not having a limb to anchor yourself on (especially for the feet).

I haven't mashed them all up yet, but stay tuned for more of these MPO clips featuring triplet groupings (RLL, LRR), fiveadiddles (RLRLL, LRLRR), and an assortment of alternating foot groupings.

And please accept my apologies for being absent from YouTube (in terms of uploads, at least) for the last year or so. University and various musical projects have eaten up a lot of my time. I really appreciate all of the interest you all have shown (whether it's praise or criticism!), especially those who have subscribed. It means a lot to have this community of drummers and musicians here to bounce ideas off of.

Those shells and heads are beautiful... They seem really inspiring. Though I dont know if they help tone at all..

They don't change the tone at all, actually. It's just marker on the underside of the head. The mass of the ink is completely negligible so the sound is exactly the same.

And thank you! They certainly give me something to look at on those long, boring commercial gigs.
