Fuck Vedder is cool - that version was a sick rendition of SSB - a million times better than the bullshit versions we get these days from chumps like Aguillera, Knowles, and multiple random American Idol winners. Bob Costas?! hahahah! - what a freaking Revenge of the Nerds'esk character that muppet is!
That's the way you do it. No embellishments, no "look at me" histrionics or changing the words around, or taking 2 and a half minutes to sing it. Just sing it the way it's drawn up and let the words of the song be the star, not yourself. It figures E-Vedder would be smart enough to know this, as opposed to some of the dummies out there like the Jessica Simpsons and Beyonces of the world.
I maybe wrong, but I understand that Eddie was singing an encore. He sung the anthem, Bob was about to begin his thing, then Eddie sang the anthem again due to crowd demand. That is, I think, why Bob looked like "what the" when Ed starts up the song.
