Heather Mac Donald is a John M. Olin fellow at the Manhattan Institute and a contributing editor to City Journal. She also is a recipient of 2005 Bradley Prize for Outstanding Intellectual Achievement. Her newest book, The Immigration Solution: A Better Plan Than Today's, coauthored with Victor Davis Hanson and Steven Malanga, chronicles the effects of broken immigration laws and proposes a practical solution to securing the country's porous borders.

Of course. They only come here at all because greedy businesses want a source of cheap near-slave labor. If they couldn't get jobs here, they wouldn't come at all.

The businesses benefit by paying far less than they could pay a citizen. The immigrants benefit because even the bum deal they get here is better than at home. The whole thing is an alliance of the Rich and Poor against the Middle Class. Free labor simply can't compete against Slave Labor.

Immigration has to be controlled. If you call that racist and I don't care how many languages you speak and of you education, if you refute this fact, it's purely ideological and nothing to do with rationality. The US citizen has allowed and paid for millions of illegal immigrants and have not complained until know due to economic reasons. I think a "thank you is in order" for allowing people escaping there own country that refuses to take care of them.

@neotoy cheap labor laws are not the problem. the federal goverment did not do anything to stop illegals from coming. they say they will secure the borders but they failed. that's it bring the troops home and secure the borders. and get rid of welfare too so that americans can start working instead of relying on illegal to do all the dirty work. replubicans and democrates failed to see this.

@jupiter919 oh I didn't know the 40,000 mexican troops killed by Americans during wars in the 1800's because of gold in California, slavery to indians to work in mines, and exploitation by whites, I didn't know they felt saved,you probably think the same with the atomic bombs. Spanish conquistadors were as horrible as the Americans who stole the lands and killed people, and many of them are illegal in this country. You have to excuse me my English,it is my fifth language, and I am an immigrant.

@thebobbyblock Yes that was true thousand of years ago, but today governments exist to take care of its people. Today corrupt governments squander there money on themselves rather than their people. The individual illegal immigrant should not be blamed, instead blame the governments that allow the exploitation if its people. US citizens and illegal immigrants are put at risk. The day when the money runs out to support illegal immigrants is soon approaching.
