  • Well done Nigel! Good for you. Why should you have to play after such a blatant calculated insult? You did the right thing and maybe this guy will think wice about his behaviour with future opponents. Nice one.

  • Great Short!! One of the favorite players. Best

    wishes from Argentina.

  • @federer4life no i don't think so, i think shake hands has nothing to do with respectful..or do u mean forced to respect other players?

  • @nataschmidtt It shows respect to the other player. And being respectful is important in chess.

  • what is the point of shake hands if it was forced?

to me nothing wrong with cheparinov

  • Nigel is a great chess player, an atacking genius, and one of the best ambasadors of the game.

  • @branwhitcomb because of this game, yes. It also doesn't come with precondition, so if you put on a glove with glass shards on it and offer to shake hands, them refusing to do so is technically a forfit. Also, if for example Nakamura and Habu both wanted to do a bow thing instead of a handshake, it would automatically count as a double forfit. Arn't rules made on a whim just so perfect!

  • Is it not a FIDE rule now that you MUST shake hands, or forfeit?

  • > you could choose to forfeit the game

I strongly disagree that this should be the outcome.

  • The point is to sit down and play chess. Not to worry about being insulted, and then expected to play 100%.

The handshake in this case is about the chess game and nothing else. IT IS your choice still, and you could choose to forfeit the game, as the price for the insult, or not participate in the tournament.

  • Short is a thoroughly unpleasant little shit. I enjoyed immensley the way Kasparov beat him again and again, making him look like the ordinary player that he is.

  • what's the big deal? he doesn't like him for some reason and he doesn't shake his hand. that's all there is to it. Players don't have to shake hands. Afterall, Short is not a gentleman, after what he wrote. Such are chess players, big ego competitive fighters.
