http://www.sparkyuonline.com (Basic Electrical Wiring) Here is a short video explaining how to wire a single pole light switch during the rough in process of rewiring a residential home.
You have power coming in and you have a switch leg going out to the light. I also explain that you should leave about 8" of wire during make to attch safely to the light switch.
Some people make these wires so short it makes it difficult to wire the light switch.

  • Ok, sparkyUonline, answer these:

No sleeving on your protective conductor?

Metal staples on mains voltage cables?

    Twist on wire nuts?

Stanley knife to strip outer sheath?

Numerous non compliances to BS7671 (UK wiring regs).

  • @Techozek In compliance w/ National Electrical Code for the U.S. .

Razor knife could be over doing it a tad? If any one knows the exact code that says you should not use a rzor knife let me know.

    Thanks for posting

  • @sparkyUonline i have a romex stripper but i prefer a razor knife, as long as you are careful it's fine if you ask me.

  • @ibeleaf I have never owned a pair of romex strippers and also have never had a short from using a knife.

  • Cool !

  • @tomatnite Thanks

  • Hey Sparky, thanks for taking the time to make this. Its always nice to see how a professional addresses even the simpler of tasks. Almost identical to the way I make up my box as well, so I know I'm on a good path. Always look forward to your videos buddy, cheers.

  • Can't believe you suicide tap the neutrals sparky.. I'm a journeyman and I always twist solid wire together

  • @sparkyUonline i have that L shaped single folded piece of metal one wit the triangle slicer and stripping holes. i've used it once to try it and it's been buried in my toolbag since.

  • @sparkyUonline

Well, there isn't a regulation for that probably, but I mean in terms of good practice and not risking cutting inner conductor insulation. I understand US and UK have different practices.

Do you guys ever use the method of taking side cutters, cutting vertically down the end of the cable, and using the CPC as a "cheese wire" to slice open the sheath by pulling it down the length of the cable?

That is the method we use. No risk of damage to inner conductor insulation.

  • @ibeleaf Thanks bud,I am not going to stop making videos any time soon. I've been real busy at work. Try to fit them in when I have "spare" time.

    Sparky

  • @ibeleaf It all depends on my conditions.
