The gold under the WTC belonged to Scotia-Mercata. The precious metals branch of the bank of Nova Scotia. The moment it could be accessed and probably sent to Toronto.

It was in the news at the time because it seemed irreverent to care about gold after so many lives were lost. The good news is that at least that bank didn't know 911 was coming.
