Few sopranos (Ponselle, Tebaldi and Freni are examples), can establish the right mood for Barbara's sad tale. The variations of "salce," are sung in such way, that the last one is almost void of tone (a sort of echo of what's to come). This is a sort of "mad scene," and Callas masterfully is the mistress of mood and interpretation. The "Ave Maria" is lovely.

One of the few very late recordings of Callas in serius vocal decline that I find most exquisite. Indeed the "salce" word is sung in the most curius / bizarre / suspended way and it is the best I have heard along with Te Kanawa's (!!!)
