This is an absolutely monstrous sound. Not for the faint of heart, and certainly not for bubble gum pop. Resist the temptation to associate this sound with Yes/Rick Wakeman; the organ Wakeman used for the Yes/solo albums was a real one. Nonetheless, this sound will take a standard guitar multi-track song and turn it into a mondo epic--be it with pounding chords or vivid arpeggios. Add 8 Choir for the ultimate cathedral experience.

My example invokes a little of J.S. Bach's "Great" Fugue, followed by some chords and arpeggios. Pretty much anything you throw at this bank will be epic and H-U-G-E, warm and analog.

I notched up the Tone wheel hard right and added plate and cathedral reverb for this example. I've heard several different sampled church organs before, and none of them quite compares to the character and raw power of the M400 one.

Comments/suggestions are always welcome!

  • Extraordinary - I always thought mellotrons where supposed to be kinda kinda lo-fi and deteriorated, but this sounds like an authentic replication, it would appear I've got mellotrons all wrong!

Are you using the original Gforce software M-Tron or the more recent Pro edition?

  • The original version. Pro came out last autumn, and though it looks like a handsome update, I'm not exactly sure when I'll get around to getting it. If you're interested in using any of the banks from my examples, you'll be happy to know that the entire original M-Tron library is included with Pro (with the exception of I think about three obscure banks).

  • Very interesting indeed

    What's the inspiration from 0:20 to 40?

    I wish anyone could answer...Please!

  • Honestly, it's difficult to say what I was thinking of at the time, though it sounds a bit like a mashup of Rick Wakeman's "Jane Seymour" and the passage in the finale movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony just before the main chrous. Weird combination, eh? Mostly, though, it was just some musing intended to illustrate how the 'Tron organ handled short, abrupt playing.

  • We are mellotronlovers indeed. I hav made so many mellotron soundfonts, that 'm lad it's over. It sure takes som time to go through one sound. And then it's time for the next, and next.

Did you use Vienna as well?

  • I use Vienna whenever I want to work with or edit raw samples. I've sampled different M-Tron banks and made other SoundFonts from various 'Tron samples I've found on the Internet. I've pretty much got it down to a science I do it so much.

  • not a real organ:(

  • i love the sound. It's epic!

  • love the Bach

  • I liike it!

  • This has to be the most realistic mellotron sound ever. I mean, besides the hard attack and the slightly wavering intonation at various notes, it sounds almost like you really are playing a real pipe organ.

  • Ah, if only you were correct! I suffered through M400 horrific idiosyncrasies in the trenches. Low tech is being kind but at the time, little was as cool and the public was wild about them. To this day as well.. What we have here is some great sampling technology in a Mellotron suit. I shudder to think what a pipe organ on the tape rack of the 70's would have sounded like. I have an Orchestron with a pipe organ disc and it is probably very close. Great video Mr. Squonk ! Like father, like son

  • Play Pictures at an Exhibition!

  • thats a midi controler or just an organ with IN and OUT midi????
