This is an old metal planer and it is planing a piece of cast iron.

The metal frame on the back was added when an electric motor was added.

The old gal had not seen use in many years and took some cleaning and minor repairs to get back in operation.

I am told it dates between 1880's and 1900. No name is on machine but I believe it resembles a Federal.

  • There are 3 pulleys on the input shaft with the belt shifter. The center pulley is keyed to the shaft and drives it. The outer 2 pulleys are idlers that spin freely .

The outer crossed belt moves to the center pulley to drive the table back forward for the next cut. The inside belt runs straight to drive the table into the cut.

The drive pulley on top for the crossed belt is larger so the table will return faster than it cuts to allow for more of the operating time to be cutting time.
