At the Big Apple National Convention, 2008, Neal Adams gives his opinion about the whole situation with Captain Marvel; the fact that Marvel Comics holds the trademark to the name while DC Comics owns the copyright to the original character by that name, and therefore the original Captain Marvel can never be published in a book with his own name on the cover.

  • BTW has Neal Adams ever actually drawn Cap? If not I'd love to see his late 70's early 80's char design of Cap.

ALSO this copyright shit is ruining this country and industry I just wish the two fucking companies would merge already like everyone wants. It's not like freelance darlings like Mark Waid or Kurt Busiek or Grant Morrison or Geoff Johns or Frank Miller or Neal Adams or Walt Simonson or John Byrne or Dan Jurgens don't have the INZ to broker a sitdown between the two rival mob factions.

  • He did draw one picture of Billy and Cap that appeared in a calendar in 1976, I think. That picture is actually in this video. Can you spot it?

He also drew Mar-Vell in the Kree-Skrull War.

  • I'd like to see Marvel buy the rights to the original, and have the Big Red Cheese become their mascot character.

  • DC comics are the ones who put Fawcett comics out of business with their lawsuit back in the 50's. Why should they be allowed to prosper from what was a pretty spurious lawsuit.

Marvel Comics did something perfectly legal and published the Captain Marvel comic book and trademarked the name after Fawcett went out of business and before DC bought the rights.

I respect Neal Adams but in this case he's just plain wrong.

  • I so concur with this obvious rationale...and would hope that Marvel Comics does someday sooner than later.

  • He's right!! I hope someone at Marvel sees this and does the right thing.

  • Nobody worries about copyright infringment anymore. Wether it be premeditated or an unconcious developement, all the big companies (besides Marvel who's out of the pic and owned by Disney and Dark Horse comics) are owned by the founders of Image. Todd ownes Image primarily, Marc Silvestri ownes Top Cow, and Jim Lee is Co-Producer in DC which gives him a lot of weight to throw around. If they all need something they turn to each other. When Tyrese made MAYHEM all those guys helped.
