Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Piano Sonata No.5 Opus 10 No.1 in C minor
Composed in 1796-98, this rather short three movement work in C minor written after Beethovens String Trio No.4 also in the same key, is in a much lighter vein than any of its precursors in this medium. The outer movements in particular suggest a more classical interpretation, for the texture is much cleaner and the chromaticism more obvious. The slow movement marked adagio molto forms the profound core of this fifth sonata. Beethoven often chooses to modulate into the sub mediant for his slow movements whether it be sonata, symphony or vocal work.
