Trumpet Summit with Warren Vaché, Charlie Miller and Bob barnard

playing at the New Orleans & Classics Jazz Festival of Ascona, Ticino, Switzerland

New York-based trumpeter Warren Vaché - the perfect incarnation of the artist-gentleman and world traveler - returns to JazzAscona with his band to offer the festival public, after a year's absence, his incomparable style, modeled by absorbing the lessons of the artists who most influenced him: Louis Armstrong above all, but also Clifford Brown and his teacher "Pee Wee" Erwin. A sound made up of warm and engaging sonorities; a super-fine technique, and an innate natural charisma are the main qualities of Warren Vaché, spiced up with an outstanding sense of humour that makes every one of his live shows something unique and unpredictable. A musician gifted with a great artistic sensibility, Vaché has in his career played with great musicians such as Benny Goodman and Gerry Mulligan, and is very much in demand at major jazz festivals in Europe and the U.S. He returns to Ascona with a band that includes his brother Allan Vaché, virtuoso clarinetist; Tardo Hammer on piano, Leroy Williams on drums and lastly, the gifted Australian bassist Nicky Parrott.

Trumpeter Bob Barnard, is without any doubts one of the best-known jazz players on the Australian scene. Barnard, grown up musically in Sidney, has established himself as a great player of classic jazz repertoire, from Louis Armstrong to Count Basie, from Sinatra to Nat "King" Cole. In recent decades he has livened the Australian jazz scene playing and leading a variety of groups. Barnard, considered one of the finest cornetists in the world, is also the organizer of Bob Barnard's annual Jazz Party in Melbourne, featuring trad jazz.

That said, after listening to this clip, I must say that I, too, did not care for his solo here. Now, where do you get off saying all that nasty shit to me? I am no pretender, and no phony, and I DO know something about music, so why don't you just BITE ME!

  • @lennyaeger

I actually did not post that. I think what probably happened was that I was using a friend's computer, or he was using mine, and he thought he was signed in to YouTube with his account when I was still signed in.

I respect Charlie, and just saw and heard him in Ascona (we were both performing there) and found him to be an impressive trumpet player.

  • One more time:

This was from the "New Orleans & Classics Jazz Festival of Ascona" (switzerland )Charlie Miller was the only NEW ORLEANS JAZZMAN IN THIS BAND.

  • @jonnybogue

onnybogue , You are so phony. You are a pretender. You know nothing about music. Charlie Miller was playing Dixieland and progressive long before your grandpa was born. How does the early 50s sound when he was playing in the beat and jazz clubs in New Orleans as a teen ager. Today he is a well respected Jazz man and is still active in the city where jazz was born New Orleans. You can't touch this man, Listen to him again and learn something

  • Rather modest of the master Vache to take such a low key role on this recording?

  • Bob Barnard is my hero, mentor and friend. Ain't many who can touch him. Funny, he is better known in the US than in Australia.

  • Yeah tell it like it is Jonny! He should not be on the same stage. Maybe he is the festival organizer or corporate sponsor who wanted to sit in. I love how he moves his tuning slide at the END of the tune! Ha

  • who's this jive wanker Charlie Miller and what's he doing plying with these cats??
