In 1981, the United Nations proclaimed the third Tuesday of September as an International Day of Peace, and it was requested that it shall be devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples. In 2002, it was decided to set the UN International Day of Peace on a fixed date, the 21st of September, and all member states, organisations of the United Nations system, regional and non-governmental organisations and individuals are supposed to commemorate, in an appropriate manner, the International Day of Peace. (UN declaration)
It is very sad to notice that CISV, a non-governmental organisation promoting peace is not involved in the commemoration of this International Day of Peace. There are too few events taking place in too few chapters on that day. That is why a project has been launched at the Annual International Meeting of CISV in 2005 in order to participate in the commemoration and promotion of this Day by planning activities run by CISV members on a local or national level. It is up to each member of CISV to put this project into action.
Every CISV Chapter has its own reality and it will never be possible to make an event in each country, each chapter. However, it is step by step that things can be changed and ideas like this can be implemented.
