You have only understood one tiny facet of this incredible book. This book is about fear of the unknown and others. In fact on the very first page Harper Lee quotes FDR's famous words "we have nothing to fear but fear itself". Think about it now, the kids were afraid of Mrs Dubois and Boo Radley but they turned out to be decent people, especially Boo. Lee is drawing attention to the fact that racism is based on fear. The entire book is about the destructiveness of fear.
