The low down:

@ Skydive Long Island (www.skydivelongisland.com) - Plane took off around 9:15am, beautiful albeit cool morning on eastern long island. First time jumping (not likely last), tandem jump with guy named John who was very good (I'm alive).

Ride to altitude:

Last into plane meant first out. Ride up to 13,500ft was a bit disarming, especially given the cool air and clear view through the transparent plane door. Was still beautiful... Took about 15 minutes to get to altitude. I was encouraged when John said that I was hooked to him (around 9,000 feet if I recall correctly).

Transition to free fall:

Being at the edge of the plane's door, gripping my harness was one of the morning's highlights (the overhead rail was calling to me but that was for John). The transition from that position to free fall is a bit blurry, but I think I was pretty lucid for most of free fall (40 seconds), though I can't recall looking down much during that portion. No frame of reference anyway at that height...Note that you cannot hear anything during freefall!

Free fall:

The camera guy told me he'd be making crazy gestures while filming, though when he actually does it you can't help but wonder if he's trying to convey actionable information :-)...pesky human nature. 40 seconds (13.5k feet to 5k feet) comes and goes in about 15 and then for 4 minutes it's a great ride down.

Under the canopy:

While descending under the canopy, there's a constant tension between enjoying the view and contemplating the physics of the situation. I'm sure the latter gives way to the former after a few more jumps. One of my first thoughts was would have I been able to do that solo first time. Funny thing, post chute deployment, the straps are 'loosened up' and the feeling of separating from the guy with the chute at 3500 feet is interesting, as you might imagine.

Landing was a piece of cake. Overall, 10/10 experience and will pursue it more aggressively this coming Spring as the place shuts down end of November.
