A Mexican-born former federal prosecutor has been nominated to be a federal judge in Texas.
President Barack Obama nominated Marina Garcia Marmolejo (mahr-moh-LAY'-hoh) on Wednesday to a U.S. District Court vacancy in the Southern District of Texas.
The 39-year-old will replace Judge Samuel Kent, who is serving a 33-month federal prison sentence after pleading guilty to lying to investigators about sexually abusing two female employees.
The U.S. Senate must confirm Marmolejo's nomination, but both Texas senators praised the choice.
Marmolejo is a naturalized U.S. citizen from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. She served three years as an assistant federal public defender in West Texas before working as a federal prosecutor in the Southern District of Texas from 1999 to 2007

A native Laredoan has been nominated by President Obama to the U.S District Court for the Southern District of Texas.
Marina Garcia Marmolejo is a 1989 graduate of United High School and has previously served as the Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of Texas, as well as an Assistant Federal Public Defender, and Assistant Federal Prosecutor.
If confirmed by the senate, Marmolejo would serve as one of two federal judges for the US District Court here in Laredo.
