Stephen King's eight-volume epic The Dark Tower once again could be hitting the big and small screen with Russell Crowe taking over the role of gunslinger "Roland Deschain" from Javier Bardem.

Last year, director Ron Howard was set to take on King's ambitious story that blends elements of sci-fi, fantasy, horror and westerns in what would become three movies and two limited run television series. With studios tightening their belt on budgets as of late, Universal Pictures ultimately cancelled the project forcing Howard and his producing partner Brian Grazer to shop the movie to other studios. Back in March we reported Warner Bros' interest in taking on the project with actor Javier Bardem still attached to star, but not much has been heard about the movie since...until now.

According to Deadline, Warner Bros is set to make a final decision whether they will be committing to the grand endeavor, but with Crowe now starring. No word what prompted the exit of Bardem and no formal offer has been made to Crowe, but the studio is making their determination based on his planned involvement. Crowe has seen his star power fade a bit over the past few years, but is set to star in two big upcoming movies - as Jor-El in the Superman reboot Man of Steel and as Noah in director Darren Aronofsky's big budget telling of the biblical flood.

As for the TV series that will help bridge the gap between the first and second and second and third films, HBO is reportedly in discussions to handle the television side of things. This definitely seems like it has potential to be a HUGE project, but do you think it could be too big a risk for the studio or do you really want to see gunslinger Deschain finally make it onto the big screen? Let us know in the comments and don't forget to hit that subscribe button while you're there. I'm Vivian Fabiola, thanks for watching!

I would not be happy if Russell Crowe played Roland. Not happy at all.

Christian Bale would be perfect for Jack Mort, since Bale played in american psycho he would be perfect for the part for when Roland enters into Jack mort and goes on an epic quest for bullets and Keflex through New York.

It could have been worse I suppose. I wonder who'll play the man in black.

Russell Crowe is a great actor, but he is not Roland, Javier Bardem is better in that aspect. If you watched no country for the old men you know why, the character he played is like Roland's evil twin. Viggo Mortensen is also a good choice, so is Hugh Jackman. But I think one of the best choices would be Robert Patrick, is a more experienced actor and looks very similar to Clint Eastwood and Roland of course,

The more time goes on, the more I think the only man alive to play Roland in an adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Dark Tower” is Daniel Craig.

I mean look at him. Look at those eyes!

You won't, but that's not the issues. There is such a thing as overexposure, and that will reduce marketing options and sales dramatically if pushed to its logical conclusion. Let the wheel of fortune spin and give someone new a chance at sure hit epics.

Dylan Mcdermott is the Quintessential roland. He's as tall and fits the look well enough. See him in texas rangers if you disagree.

I always pictured James Hetfield as Roland and Maynard James Keenan as Walter. Crowe would be good (does no one remember Gladiator or A Beautiful Mind?) but I would love to see Viggo play the role. He's a guy who totally gets into his character. That kind of dedication shows through on screen. And I'm a fanboy just like everyone else. I mean you have to be to be able to sit through 8 books, with what seems like half of each being just detail, but quit your bitching!

So great actors should just pass up an opportunity to make a movie truly awesome so that others can have a shot? Remind me to tell that to Brando and Deniro the next time I see them.
