He reminds me of a solid block of concrete...

Dear Mr. Kempff, dear Wilhelm, you are really playing this a bit too hard and cold... You should rather think of a nice and sunny September afternoon in a wonderful landscape of Southern Europe while playing this piece. These warm and nice places are exactly the place where Brahms leads us,- i.e. loosen up now and pass on some smile and happiness around yourself.. Right? :)

@nokia1242000 Please... listen some other pianosts before saying «this is the best».

My goodness! all these harsh criticisms. First time I heard Mr. Kempff play this was--when?--some forty years ago. I loved and admired it then--I still do. The thing of it, you cannot OVER-interpret Brahms--you need, seems to me, just that touch of reticence--of pulling back. I think Mr. Kempff does a simply masterly job. Bravo!

@TheGreatPerahia I totally agree with you

This piece should be played with a sense of longing, if you play it too quick you dont capture the moment. I am constantly surprised at professional musicians who just dont capture the spirit of a piece even though their reputation should reflect this. I know there is a degree of personal interpretation but some pianists just lose the plot entirely as Kempff has in this.

@rezmogm Far too quick. Lupu's is an even better performance or Gilels.

This need to breathe more - where the fire?

Incredible!! Even though it's faster than usual
What a hurry he was in! He needed a toilet break, I think.

I too think he's playing this a bit to quickly and prefer the Rubenstein version.
