Sara Teasdale (1884 1933)

Born August 8, 1884 in St Louis, Missouri, Sara Teasdale did not begin school until she was nine years old because of poor health. She was the youngest of four children of Mary Willard, who was forty when Sara was born, And John Teasdale. Her siblings were all much older than she, the nearest her age was her fourteen year old brother, John Jr. Growing up among adults, and isolated from peers by her frailty, she amused her self with inventing stories. She became interested in poetry as a teenager and published her first collection of poetry when she was twenty-three in 1907. She married a rich exporter in 1914, though she had a relationship with poet Vachel Lindsay. Lindsay and She remained friends throughout her life. In her time she was popular with the public, but her early work was considered unpolished by some critics. In 1918 she won the Columbia Poetry Prize (later renamed Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.)

She became increasingly unhappy with her marriage and divorced in 1929. She continued to be depressed and committed suicide in January 29, 1933by overdosing on sleeping pills. Two years later Lindsay also committed suicide.

  • Wonderful poems, thank you for posting.

  • Agh.... Her poetry needs to be read by a woman!

  • Oh so sad to hear of her tragic end. But what delicately charming poetry she left us. (Thumb up fave.) Thank you so much for enriching my day.
