Rollie is our two-year old male Tall Coton de Tuléar. As you can see, Rollie was raised from a puppy to be "one of the boys". This rare breed is originally from the island of Madagascar, and the "Tall" variant is even rarer still. Tuléar is a port on Madagascar now known as Toliara. The Coton is a playful, affectionate, intelligent breed. Cotons have hair (a lot like human hair), which makes them very popular and compatible with people who have allergies. Because they have hair, they don't shed. Since it is a non-shedding breed with no dander, it is hypoallergenic and has no "doggie smell". The Coton de Tuléar developed on the Island of Madagascar and is still the island's national dog. The Coton's ancestors were brought to Madagascar in the 16th and 17th century on pirate ships.

  • Hi Pete,

He's beautiful. How heavy is he? Did you get him from a breeder? If so, which one?

  • Hi Pamela. Thanks for the kind words about Rollie. Cotons are great pets. Rollie is around 14.5 pounds. We obtained him from a Coton breeder here in Ontario, Canada. His parents and siblings are all regular Cotons, not the tall variant. I would recommend you look at some of the U.S. breeders. Check out Dr. Jay Russell's (Malagasy) Coton de Tulear Club of America web site for a list of accredited breeders. He's the man who originally introduced the breed to North America in 1974.

  • hey, Im located in Toronto, and Im looking to get my first dog, Ive done a lot of research and it says a Coton is a good fit for a novice dog owner. What are your thoughts on that?>

  • Thanks Pete. We are indeed looking at Malagasy Cotons and we're really interested in the Tall variant. I was wondering what that does to their weight, but I see that it's not a big difference.
