Flats certainly produce a particular sound when slapping. Of course it depends on what sound you want, so at some stage you may want to go to a more conventional sound using roundwounds.

George, I was just wondering what tone you are using for this. (It's obviously not full low, but when I try slap bass, it always sounds dull and kind of drones for ages.) Its probably down to bad technique though!

The sound is a combination of many things. That said, however, we usually sound just the same no matter what bass we play. So, as Jaco Pastorius said, "the sound is in my hands."
