If you only do shortboard I feel sorry for you. SUP's are here to stay. It's like in the 60's when longboarders where getting pissed off at shorboarders
who cares if you stand up with or without a paddle!
the point is that your standing up.... not like these lay down pussies that seem to think that some how they are surfing. if you stand up on a board its surfing. if you boogie board or knee board or body surf, its just as the name suggests!
its ''not'' surfing......(no matter how much you pretend it is)!
I tried SUP for the first time today out at Lahaina. After 22 years of surfing, it was like paddling out for the first time. But I accomplished my goal; Catching at least one wave while standing up and paddling in. Rented an 11ft board...what a portly girl she was!
Back when they introduced surf leashes, it was totally "gay" to have one of those, meant you were a pussy. SUP is here to stay. I surf, body surf, SUP, and having a ball...thanks Laird.. great vid too by the way, funny how people don't talk about that.
Really dude? I surf and paddleboard, I don't see why people get all pissy when it comes to people paddleboarding. Maybe its where you live and you have a bunch of people completely disrespecting everyone, but my home is really chill. Don't generalize everyone who paddleboards based on a couple people. Afterall you sound like a fisherman who gets pissed at guys surfing the pier
what's worse? a paddleboard after a wipeout with no leash scud missling through the lineup or a kitesurfer wiping out and his kite going in the water right in the middle of the lineup? I've seen both and been very glad not to have been hurt by either of them. opine
it seems now that laird sups, its cool for everyone to do it no matter their skill level. what pisses me off even more is the surf shops that market sups as beginner boards because its easier (bigger board = bigger paycheck). when the SUPper somehow manages to miss the wave he paddles into with his boatsized wave magnet, he then choses to bail and since his hands are glued to his 900 dollar ancient artsy wooden paddle, he lets his 14 ft scud missile plow the lineup. if ur lucky, it has a leash
As I have by a SUP. Stitches and blood are no fun at all. So as you can see, I think SUPers should really, really get a little better before deciding to paddle out. I have no problem with one or two, but when ten to fifteen are out, it's a little ridiculous.
And it comes down to that? Lets say that you got hit 20 times. And then say you had 50 waves stolen by these paddleboarders. Out of the 1000's of waves you have ridden, you have somehow found a way to condescend other people for what they enjoy.
I never used a SUP board but I would like to.
The point is that whenever I am in the water I am having fun. regardless of the crowds and the people who swear what they are engaged in an activity that is so much more important than everyone else.

I don't care what you ride the surf on as long as you surf on. :)
