We used the "Stargate" and the "Ring Transporter" addons for Garry's Mod 10 to build a small fort. Combined with the wire mod "gate dialer", you can create really nice forts with improved security features.
The forcefield of the stargate can be activated with a button next to the stargate or with a button on the upper level so you can block unwanted visitors. It can only be deactivated by entering the correct code on the keypad ("keypad" addon) which is located on the upper level. Also on the upper level, you can find the classical DHD and a "quick dial" button, which will dial the other gate outside the fort.
We also added a ring transporter which allows us to get on the roof to take a look around. To get back down, someone inside the fort has to activate the ring transporter. Persons inside the fort can observe the ring transporter on the roof through a RT camera.
The indicator next to the stargate outside shows the status of the forcefield. If it's green, the forefield is down and you can get through. Otherwise, it's red and you can experience the wonder of molecular deconstruction.
Sorry for the sound. It's a bit out of sync. I'm not that experienced with Fraps and Virtual Dub.

what I don't understand is that all stargates i've seen so far for gmod work the same way: if you close in on the front, pik and you're on the other side. wouldn't it be better if it would operate the way as the portal gun (if you go through, you end up on the other side without interruption or teleporting there)? it would be harder, but more realistic

No, it would be unrealistic because Stargates simply don't work this way. Remember that these Stargates are based on the TV series Stargate SG1 and Stargate Atlantis. In the series, matter has to pass the event horizon before it can be sent to the connected stargate.
Besides that: Gmods engine does not support the real portal effect which is (AFAIK) a big collection of tricks and engine modifications which make it LOOK like you are not beeing teleported. Garry said it is "to hacky" to do.
