The Wildlife Rehabilitation Center from Bogota

In the heart of the northwest of Bogota, there is a place specialized in rehabilitation and recovery for all animals who have been victims of wildlife traffic.

This place is the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center from the Environmental Secretary from Bogota, a temporary home since 1.996 to heal, nourish and treat all Colombian fauna specimens recovered from the illegal hands of traffickers.

Every day, a variety of animals arrive to this center, such as monkeys, turtles, parrots, lizards, squirrels and snakes, which were confiscated in different raids by the Environmental Secretary, The Ecologic and Environment Police and the Sijin. However, some of them are provided voluntarily by citizens.

To control the wildlife traffic, the Environmental Secretary has a couple of offices at important points of the city: the Salitre Terminal Bus and ElDorado Airport, places where the police authorities confiscated a lot of animals from the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, the Middle Magdalena and Llanos Orientales.

Actually, in this center live 1.600 animals ready to be relocated to other centers around the country. These animals have been examined, treated and diagnosed by veterinarians, biologists and animal scientists from the Environmental Secretary.

Every year, the District invests around 1.200 million pesos for food, medicines and specialized staff in charge to take care of the animals day and night. Also, this place promotes scientific research and environmental education programs to prevent the illegal wildlife traffic.

When each animal comes to the Wildlife Center is carefully inspected by specialists, who assess their physical and behavioral situation. After the initial diagnosis, the animals go to the quarantine area, where they are observed for a period of 30 days.

According to the evolution of each animal, the Environment Secretary decides which one could be released in a natural habitat, or relocated in a specialized center to complete the rehabilitation process.

Traffickers dont measure their actions with the animals. At the Wildlife Center have come tigers without claws, flamingos enclosed in boxes and birds packed in suitcases. Those citizens who adopt parrots, monkeys and turtles as pets are increasing the wildlife traffic.

The Wildlife Rehabilitation Center plays an important role in the conservation and preservation of endangered wildlife species in the country, but it requires expensive human and financial investments and the support of all the citizens to reject this illegal trade. They dont have to be a part of wildlife traffic chain, buying wild animals in market squares, roads and illegal places.

The Environmental Secretary, through the campaign In your house they dont feel at home, seeks to create awareness about the consequences for illegal wildlife traffic in our ecosystems.
