I wanted to shoot a video that wasn't outdated about Citrix XenDesktop and VMWare View. The previous Proof of Concept XenDesktop vs VMWare View video was based on XenDesktop 3 and VMWare View 3. And its exactly what you would expect from ICA/HDX vs RDP. Citrix rocks that battle. However, its been a few years since XD3 and VV3, now its XenDesktop 5 and VMWare View 4.6. VMWare now uses PCoIP, so this video compares PCoIP to ICA/HDX.

Unlike my "Part 1" video, I used a much stronger client (the reveal is at the end of the video) for the Citrix side. This client could support all features of HDX and as such the video looks a ton better. So in Part1 I took some heat becuase I wasn't really comparing XD to VMware View, I agree, it ended up being a comparrison of clients that call themselves "Zero Clients" and View won that battle. However, Citrix should look a heck of a lot better than my Part 1 video so I shot a Part 2 that shows it doing proper HDX, meaning proper video redirection.

  • Probably should comment on this video. In this test I changed the Citrix client to be a much stronger client. In my Part1 video I used a low end thin client (called a Zero Client) that "supported HDX" but in truth it only supported a small subset of HDX technologies. In this video I just use my laptop running the Citrix receiver. As such I get all the HDX benefits so the video looks a ton better. You will see me drag the screen around, this is to show that the video is being MMR'd.

  • @parahumanoid MMR = MultiMedia Redirection

The Video not updating until he lets go of the mouse button is just a side effect of using such a technology.

As is the inability to snap a picture of the video.

the View 4.6 side is showing that the video is being completely rendered in software on the server before being transmitted to a dumb PCoIP terminal/client.

Would have been interesting to add is to have Task Manager running on the right hand side showing CPU load at same time.

  • I'm not seeing the point this video is attempting to make. You sing kudos to a solution that allows for the video viewport to get stuck in to one place on screen, while you're moving the container around. It's different, but hardly any better. I simply don't see the point.
