As of last week, I had a total of about 10 days experience on a snowboard and had never boarded more difficult than a blue run. I flew into Denver on Dec 31 to meet up with James and Cinnamon Wright and hit the slopes of Breckenridge on the first day of 2010. Four days later, Jimmy and I decide to do the double black diamond Imperial Bowl on Peak 8.

The weather was excellent but the wind was kickin at the top. While the hike to the summit was only 158ft vertical, hiking at 13,000ft elevation immediately after a 4,400ft vertical change over the previous 45 minutes (base to summit) was not easy. Added to that, the bowl face got steeper as we ascended and our better judgement (somewhat clouded by a lack of oxygen) was telling us to turn around.

The views from the summit were amazing. This video mainly shows the scenery on the way up and at the top. There's not much video of us coming down the mountain (especially at the top) because we were trying very hard not to die. And while Jimmy was much better at coming down the mountain, I didn't hit the record button during his video.

Altogether today, we did 4 runs down the bowl including the one hike up to the summit.

  • imperial bowl is only a double black diamond due to the surrounding terrain. If you start from the top, the first 4-5 minutes are tough but after that it becomes more gradual and easy to negotiate. A great run, but if you are looking for something a little more challenging and less crowded try the Whale's Tail or George's Thumb. Always loved the Colorado resorts, but I'm heading to Utah this year and trying my luck in the Park City resorts and Alta.

  • That snow looks great. If you don't mind me asking, when did you go? How did the snow feel to you? It looks (and sounds) like it's great snow. Let me know some more details, I'd love to ski this next season.
