Labels, schmabels!. Artist William Weith demonstrates how colors of oil paint can vary widely depending on the brand selected, even when the colors are listed by the same name.

  • I mix paint a lot due to my budget... but i seem to like Gamblin paint the best...and M Graham is pretty good though it is really oily. This was a useful demo..it would be interesting to see how these pigments age over time as well! Im always wondering about that....

  • @paulcumes You can't go wrong with Gamblin oils--I use several of their colors on my palette. I totally agree about M. Graham: very high quality, but last time I used it (several years ago) it just seemed too "buttery" or "oily" to me. I probably should revisit M. Graham to see if it's any different.

Excellent point about pigments aging over time. The 3 pigments used here are very lightfast, but SO many colors sold today aren't (think Alizarin Crimson).

  • Thanks for your comments! Nice selection of brands you've chosen--you've obviously put a lot of thought into what you use. Kudos!

  • Thanks for watching! It's fun comparing different brands, and it's helped me clarify just what I'm looking for in a particular color. I think it's a great idea to build your own palette around the colors and brands that work for you- - there are a lot of great paints out there to try. Thanks for your comments!

  • Hey! This was really cool. There ought to be a lot more of these comparisons on youtube. I will definitely mix and match brands, although now that I am moving from acrylic to alkyd my choices are virtually nil anyway...

Only critique I have is a brighter and more neutral light source(s).

    Great show!

  • @HatchetsNCleavers Thanks for your input! I was thinking of doing a video about using alkyds and alkyd medium --they certainly can be handy.

Thanks so much for your subscription. Mahalo --W

  • Nice job! Very useful information. I use a combination of several different brands of oil paint including WInsor & Newton, Old Holland, Gamblin and Lukas 1862.

  • Great vid! I wish more people did this with other brands because its kind of expensive just to buy tubes of paint all the time! I've only been using one brand across my palette, but I would love to try others!
