EVH plays the verse riff by alternating the open A string muted with the A-dyad with a shuffle feel, so its really tricky.

I'm afraid!! You really gotta nail the minor 3rd bend, which is the very first note!! You have to pre bend, and if you fuck that up, it's all ova red rova..

Well, the good news, is there's only 7 scale shapes. Then there's modes, so that expands everything by another 7. And then there's God's favorite number, 7, and then there's years it took my to memorize all this shit, which was 7. So all in all, 3 months.
