  • I don't understand the sound. It sounds cute but a TGV or other HST has a pitch that seems to be in sync with the acceleration. With the ICE there is a distinct low tone that suddenly "winds up" to a high tone that stays irrespective of the speed. Other HSTs don't do that, they just wind up in a sort of continuous fashion relative to the increase in speed. Why is that? Anyone know? Whilst I like the ICE very much, it is loud from the outside I find.

  • That's right, I think so, too. But I also don't know the answer ;)

  • @trident3b I'm driving the swiss ICN. His sound is a little different but he also has a sound changing at low speed and remaining the same once he changed. This is the noise of the ''intermediary current circle'' or how it's called in english. It means you nearly don't hear the noise of the motors (a little in the background) but the sound of the power supply for them instead. Could be the same here :-)

  • @Railriderchris

Isn't it the pulse width modulation? Transforming first the 15kV to a maximum voltage for the engines and then regulate the current with PWM?

But why is this that loud, louder than the engines 0o

Welche Zwischenkreisspannung?

  • the railjet from the ÖBB sounds MUCH nicer :D i'm at munich for school since 2 weeks, and listened to the sound from the railjet 3 times, and its sooooo brilliant :D

    i love it

  • @Geflechtmeister Sorry, i'm not good in english. But i think you mean the right thing; transforming the 15KV monophased current in direct current, from which you can retransform the necessary 3-phased alternate current for the motors. As for the reason why the engines don't make a loud noise anymore: An electric motor makes nearly no sound. What you hear in old engines are the motor- brushes and the gearwheels. Modern trains have many small motors without brushes and different transmission

  • @Geflechtmeister

The Three-Phase-Inverters are driven with sth. like PWM.

The Power which goes to the Motors depends on the Frequency.

They (the motors)are also making a noise but you have to hear that for yourself, no microphone can capture it (too quiet).
