Photographer & birders guide to this rookery! Gives you GPS coordinates and best locations & times of day (based on sun angle) to photograph or watch the herons and other residents of this amazing rookery and wetland!
Nature & Wildlife Photographer makes multiple visits to a Great Blue Heron Rookery in Northern Illinois. Watching, simply observing and being is the key to making images of these or any of our wild creatures. Patience & Observation in Nature reveals much about an animal but Kristen finds that it also reveals much about our own Human Nature. What we can learn from being immersed in Nature is an astonishing world into the depths of ourselves. View more images of herons in my fine art galleries online here: http://kristenwestlake.net/87x

  • 5 STARS for your video . . and thanks for sharing your beautiful thoughts about nature

  • Excellent! These are my favorite animals. I absolutely love seeing them in their natural environment from very far away.

  • Precious experiences with the magnificent GBH. I am jealous and in awe of these birds.

Thanks for sharing your images, I have taken images like yours ... but knowing someone feels the same I did when I took mine is fantastic.

  • Great photos! Where is this rookery?

There's a large rookery at Devil's Lake State Park, by the group camping area, by the start of the CCC trail. I had a group of campers there a couple years ago, and it was hard to sleep for all the calling and squaking!

  • What beautiful photography!

  • Love your observations! Blue Herons are my favorites - so beautiful and amazing.

  • Yeah, good stuff. Thank you for the images of the nests.

I completely agree - 'you can't help but learn'!

There's a Great Blue Heron that visits the field near my house. It will hunt gophers.

    Amazing bird.
