Philippine president Benigno Aquino was keen to show off the Philippine navy's capabilities in special rescue operations. This came after his government has been highly criticized for last month's botched hostage raid.

Philippine president Benigno Aquino watched his country's navy display its rescue operation skills on Friday.

Aquino's new government has drawn sharp criticism for its handling of a hostage crisis in Manila last month. An investigation into the incident revealed a severe lack of police training and equipment.

In response to the international criticisms, Aquino promises that the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces would demonstrate their improved capabilities after two weeks.

Special units of the police conducted rescue simulations in the past week, and the armed forces took their turn on Friday.

The Naval Special Operations Group simulated an anti-terrorism rescue operation at a base in Sangley Point, south of Manila.

[Benigno Aquino III, President of the Philippines]:
"I think you've seen how capable our people are. But also you get to, I'll be getting a lot of wish lists -- yesterday from the SAF (Special Action Force), today from the navy, later I guess from the army. And we will, a lot of these items are not impossible to get, and they should be given the necessary tools."

Elite unites of the police and the army were on standby during last month's hostage situation, but were not deployed. Instead, Manila's SWAT unit did the job, which ended in the death of eight hostages and the gunman.

  • No need for modernization. They're fond of "customization". No seriously, If you watch Filipino documentaries about the Military, you'll see that most of the vehicles, guns, bazookas and aircrafts as well are the leftovers of ww2. But still, they are capable of fighting terrorist. Now that's what we call Soldiers.
