Horn honking drivers may be reminiscent of a rush hour annoyance if you are living in a big city. But a Sydney music professor believes there can still be some aesthetics, tuning the car horns with other
musical instruments. Let's take a closer look.
STORY:
Professor Michael Atherton composed the score to connect the festival with the local culture of the working-class Campbelltown area. He invited members from the New South Wales "Ute Club" to play in the piece.
The "Car Orchestra" features the engines and horns of five utility trucks, known as the "ute," alongside a saxophone, double bass and DJ.
[Prof. Michael Atherton, University of Western Sydney]:
"The aesthetic here is about the traffic jam of life, so it seems logical. I am not trying to make sweetness, I am saying this is what we live in, let's try to find some humor, a moment of joy and status in that. So to me they fit perfectly, I am not trying to harmonize everything, I am trying to blend it."
The first utility truck ever built was in the Australian state of Victoria in 1933 after a farmer's wife wrote a letter to car company Ford, complaining that she was always saturated when she arrived to church in the farm truck.
And so a utility truck that was classy enough to go to church on a Sunday and take pigs to the market on Monday, was born.
The ute remains a popular Australian vehicle today, especially in rural parts of the country where roads are flat, so heavy loads are easily transportable.
Car horns, the only thing loud enough for those old people to hear!

The NSW Ute Club did interviews on Channel Nine News, Triple J, Reuters TV, 2UE & Sydney Morning Herald. Not to mention we got rated 8th out of 10 for most watched event on Sky News for that week...And thriving from the publicity ever since.. Well done everyone.
