The late 16th-century musician Giovanni Bassano greatly admired Palestrina. He acknowledged the masters expertise and used it as a model for himself. Bassano ornamented no less than 52 of Palestrinas compositions, mainly motets. An exquisite selection of these works including the appropriate O Doctor Optime (O great instructor) was performed by Wim Becu's wind ensemble Oltremontano. In order to obtain an excellent and warm sound that perfectly blends with the voices, Oltremontano had silver trombones built. The presence of silver instruments in the music chapel of the Vatican is confirmed by various sources. Clearly only the very best was good enough for the pope.
