ZHANG:
Yesterday, contestants arrived in Manhattan to register and warm-up for NTD's Chinese International Piano Competition. Today (Friday), these talented pianists will demonstrate their skills in the New York preliminary round.

STORY:
Excitement is in the air as NTDs Chinese Piano Competition preliminaries begin later today.

Contestants come from as far away as Taiwan, to right here in New York City. They did their last minute preparations at Hunter College in Manhattan... and say feel ready to go!

[Yang Paini, Contestant]:

I am so glad to have this chance to participate in this competition in New York; I never competed in a global competition before.

[Yo Shufan, Paini's Mom]:
I think this competition is a great experience for her.

[Yang Jiefen, Paini's Grandmother]:

I am so glad that NTD is making so many great contributions to Chinese culture.

[Liu Tianen, Manhattan School of Music]:

"I am happy and excited, because I can go to the competition with my classmate.

[Mo Xiwen, Manhattan School of Music]:

I want to be able to concentrate on my music and play well, and I hope everyone who listens to my music will enjoy it.

Many contestants say they are nervous, but excited.

[Tien Yangfu, Contestant]:

I feel quite happy and am pretty much ready for the preliminary contest tomorrow.

[Lai Yiru, Contestant]:

It's very good to compete with people who also love music; we can learn something from each other.

Contestants will be playing classical music from Mozart, Bach, Beethoven and Chopin.

The NTD Chinese International Piano Competition preliminary rounds begin today at the Municipal Administration Music Hall in Manhattan.

Both the intermediary and final competitions are open to the public.

NTD, New York.
