  • Wait, since when did you need permission to marry?

  • Good question. I suspect that because they were already in the system of trying to get a visa, their getting married might have been viewed as a cynical attempt to leapfrog the system. I could be completely wrong of course. I might try and find out though.

  • I think this answers it - search google with the words "permission to marry a foreign national uk" and you'll see that anyone who's not from the European Union who wants to marry a UK national needs a certificate of approval.
