FJORDS CONTRIBUTE TO MELTING OF GLACIERS

Greenlands glaciers are melting faster than they used to, contributing to the rise of sea levels worldwide. While warmer atmospheric temperatures thin all the glaciers from above, scientists have wondered if warmer waters are also melting the many glaciers that flow into the fjords.
Two studies published in Nature Geoscience provide evidence that this is the case.

Ambitious tree-planting programs have helped slow global deforestation, but farmers are still cutting trees at an alarmingly high rate, a U.N. survey released Thursday shows.
Forests absorb and store greenhouse gases, so deforestation can exacerbate the effects of climate change.

LONDON (Reuters) - The world's floating ice is in "constant retreat," showing an instability which will increase global sea levels, according to a report published in Geophysical Research Letters on Wednesday.
NORTH POLE ICE-FREE BY 2050?
The study did not shed new light on how soon the North Pole may be ice-free in summer, which many climate experts say could happen by 2050, perhaps even earlier.
