The perfectly measured buildup that starts to really kick into high gear around 8:54, and the subsequent orgasmic climax that happens at 9:24, are pure, signature Shostakovich-ian bliss, and constitute one of my favorite stretches in all of music. And nobody tops Rostropovich's understanding of this piece.

Just total and utter bliss. Dearest Rostrpovich your love of the Cello is truly missed. No one has ever played with the passion and understanding of the sanctity of sound as you do.

The second concerto has a weak first movement. It is too long and lacks musical and developmental interest.
The rest of it is possibly the most personally revealing music he ever wrote.
(the section 1:41-1:54, for me, shows all the anguish and sadness shostakovich felt through all his life. He was so sad, yet he wasn't able even to express his grief, because of the obscene government, and the environment in which he lived.)

I was astonished and could barely believe it when I first heard this piece. Gripped from the first note to the enigmatic last. Unbelievable. What it must have been like to be there.

Great teeth gnashing at 9:30 and thank goodnes the mistake in the score that the snare drum plays during the high cello entrance after the wood slap is corrected : It should be , and here is, the tambourine: it has more venom in that snake! A recent performance in Berlin has the snare drum playing this passage with Yo Yo Ma :-( It's wrong in the score! But shostakovich was at this performance , I assume... Lynn Harell

@danielgdecastro Usually, when I perform it I ask that two players play the tremolo one at a time ,of course but so each can rest and come in and give the other a rest. This way it can stay fast during the whole passage. ;-) Lynn Harrell nice that at 602 the ritard is played: it is missing in some of the material.

I think that the tremolo of the tambourine in the cadenza (0:40) is the more difficult that the part of the cello, 53 seconds of tremolo is not easy to play xD

I agree.. that's one of my favorite albums. 1st concerto is awesome no doubt but only a true shostakovich fan will rate no 2 on top
