AK 47 vs M16 Comparing accuracy, and penetration

@tpd223 Ok. Try going on a three-month tour of duty away from any base without any cleaning equipment. Then report back. Deadly accurate, lightweight, modular, and customizable. But still unreliable and finicky. Battle is a very messy place. Blood, mud, water, snow, sand, guts. All things that will stop the M16, but not the AK. Like I said, different tools for different jobs.

Of cource americans say that the M16 is better because it's american.
-
And that what they said about AK in the beginning (about it's barrel) is bullshit! It can't do enything like it!
-
The AK-47 is much more better than M16 or M4. Those american guns aren't very reliable but AK is. And the AK:s low accruracy is because of bad shooter or its sight has beeb adjusted too up. The sight of M16 isn't as good when aiming movin target as AK:s.

se silncers on the m16.then you dont even know were you are.

cant you make an AK-47 more accurate with a better barrel

@frank6920 In other words, if shooting distances are short then the accuracy of the 7.62x39mm is adequate, and in its terminal power is excellent compared to its recoil. If you have to shoot further you either have to use a 5.56x45mm rifle or a battle rifle firing 7.62x51 (or 7.62x54R). Or to use a designated sniper rifle. But yeah there are many places where 5.56x45 or 5.45x39 are the best ones to use.
-
@frank6920 It depends somewhat on some factors. Let's take my country, Finland, as an example: you have densely forested terrain where any battle engagements would be short in range. In the 1950's we were thinking about getting assault rifles for our army, and we chose the Soviet 7.62x39mm cartridge instead of the NATO 7.62x51mm (which would work better on long range). 5.56x45 is based on the same principle as 7.62x51, it just kicks back less and has more diminutive terminal effects.

@YouJustL0stTheGame And then you would be shot with bursts, and probably one of those rounds would penetrate right through your cover and hit you. :P
-
And the Russian infantry doctrine is based on automatic fire, not single shots. That's where the AK is at its best. They have separate marksman rifles (such as Dragunov) as well.. and what about the AK-74? It shoots a cartridge that has something in common with the M16 5.56x45, the high velocity light bullet. Is it more accurate than the old AK-47?
-
The AK action might be crude but nevertheless you can hit the broad side of a barn with it. And way smaller and more distant targets..? And you could mass produce one for.. emm, say, 20 bucks, while an M16 would easily cost several hundreds. And just think which of em is more beautiful! ;D
they should do a retest to see how acurate the rifle is. not the shooter. like by putting both firearms in a vice and firing at different distances

I agree that the shooter is unqualified to shoot that rifle, that was a terrible grouping. However, the AK-47 would still lose in a vice grip situation. A well maintained m16 or m4 is a perfect launching point for the already well refined .223 round. The .223 is so small and fast that it has almost a perfect flight path out to 400 meters. The 7.62x39 tends to tumble at about 200-300 meters.

@YouJustL0stTheGame but what about inside 200-300 meters? is the ak acurate? does it hit where u aim?

@shaveddave
You should be able to hit a man sized target at those ranges. Your groupings will probably suck though. If I had to pick a survival rifle, it would be the ak. Great stopping power/reliability and decent enough accuracy to hunt and kill. If I had to pick a gun for a firefight, I'd pick the M16, has way more reach and once you hit your target they won't want to fire back.

@YouJustL0stTheGame o ok. i have an ak but i havent taken it to the range yet. when i do im gonna confirm those results. ud pick an m16 for a firefight? how far away do u think ur gonna be? lol but yea both rifles have advantages and disadvantages. it depends what you are using each for

@shaveddave
Ideally I'd be 400-500 meters away. Good luck hitting me behind cover with an ak. I still think I would have the advantage up to 50 meters due to the almost non-existent recoil. I could put 30 rounds on my target accurately and within 15 seconds.
