A pure 1,000Hz sine wave on both right and left channels, calibrated at the maximum cutting level (0dB). This signal allows calibration of laboratory equipment, or recorders. You can also check the amount of power sent to loudspeakers before beginning the tests, and notice the corrisponding listening level.
