If you have played any Blizzard game, you should know what a button/skill cooldown effect is. In this tutorial I will walk you through a very simple technique to achieve the effect in Unity with the help of ex2D and "Depth Mask" shader from pixelplacement.

About ex2D:
ex2D is a simple and powerful Unity extension that provides 2D sprite workflow in Unity standards. Check out the ex2D website for more information:

Depth Mask shader:
