It's "Back To The Future". Marty went back in time, changed the past, fixed the past, went forward to a different 1985. Then in BTTF2, Biff went back, and Marty and Doc went back to 1985 but it was Alternate 1985. So they had to go Back To The Past to stop Biff from getting that book.
Plus they had a DeLorean.
Re: Weird Names. It only makes it harder to enjoy if the names are hard to remember/differentiate from each other.

To you other question a character's name should fit the story. That is purely why someone reads those stories so to get away from reality. So allow your readers to get away even deeper by giving your characters names that are not ordinary. Give your characters names that mean something! Good luck with the book I can't wait to read it!

Do you remember the story we read in 9th grade about the guy who traveled back in time to kill a dinosaur. In the story the company he went through had to kill the dinosaur at the exact spot and moment were it was supposed to die. The company also made sure that they had a levated path so he didn't step off the path. In the story the main character steps off the path and kills a butterfly. When he returns to his present time, all the words were missing the letter E.
My answer to your question is that it doesn't matter how significant or insignificate your effect on the past is when you go back it is still significant. I think it is almost impossible to go back in time and not have some effect on the future.

Although affecting the future is a small point in this, the main focus is, if you go from your present to your past, can you really return to your present, or will you go to a present that is a parallel universe...especially if you change something in the past.
