AUSTRALIA FIRES

Thousands of Sydney commuters were stranded for hours on Monday as firefighters battled a large wildfire on the city's outskirts that closed two major highways and a train line.

Smoke caused major freeways to be closed on Sunday and continued to cause problems for commuters on Monday morning.

Around 250 firefighters and several water-bombing aircraft were battling to contain a wildfire that started late on Sunday in the Kuringai Chase National Park, which borders several northern Sydney suburbs.

New South Wales state police supplied water to thousands of motorists stranded for five hours on two major highways that were closed due to heavy smoke and firefighting activity.

Fire crews were carrying out back burning operations on Monday and setting up containment lines to control the blaze. Residents in the city's north were warned to expect the worst, and prepared their houses for possible flame.

But firefighters said that by late on Sunday evening, the threat to property had eased, as the flames moved deeper into the national park. Meanwhile, American firefighters arrived in Melbourne to help in the fire suppression effort.

NEWS-2

Goods from beached ship
Marine crews were preparing to remove fuel from a container ship which was run aground in a storm, posing a threat to wild life and spilling cargo on the popular tourist beaches and fishing grounds of southwest England.

French officials said that of the 41,700 tons of merchandise in the ship's 2,400 containers, 1,700 tons were considered dangerous, including battery acid, explosive and flammable material.

The containers also hold motorcycles, car parts, oak barrels, and household possessions being moved to new homes.

Authorities were trying to clamp down on the theft of the valuable merchandise washing ashore on Monday.

Police said people took away more than a dozen motorcycles overnight, while others trooped off the beach carrying items ranging from steering wheels to face cream.

Sidmouth and Branscombe beach are part of 95 miles of coast designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage site because of the rich fossil beds found along the shore.
