NanoBSD facilitates the creation of embedded systems. FreeNAS recently moved to NanoBSD and the experience with doing that will be presented.

For many years, FreeNAS was based on the old m0m0wall boot scripts. While this served them well for many years, they did present an impediment to upgrading to newer versions of FreeBSD. Since much of the demand for FreeNAS stems from supporting the latest hardware with the latest drivers, this dampened FreeNAS' ability to deliver timely systems for the latest hardware. After moving to NanoBSD and writing standard rc.d scripts, FreeNAS now is able to move from version to version more easily. In fact, during the development of FreeNAS 8.0, we updated FreeBSD version 4 times with minimal fuss (the biggest problem was removing the patches we'd added to FreeNAS that we'd integrated into the new FreeBSD).

This talk will present the basics of NanoBSD, the basics of the new FreeNAS and talk about the future of both. The talk is intended for a mixed audience of developers and users and will be informative to both groups.
