Another great German band I decided to post here - is the punk/rock/goth legend Xmal Deutschland, admired more abroad than in their homeland and founded in 1980 by five female musicians from Hamburg. The charismatic singer Anja Huwe was often compared to Siouxsie Sioux.
The band lasted in changed formation till 1989.
"Polarlicht" is from album Viva, released in 1987.

  • Great song!

  • @kennycwhetstone Furthermore, I fail to hear whats 'electronica' about Xmal Deutschland...

There's not a wealth of keyboards or clever sound engineering here, just raw music..

In their songs there's usually the prevalant guitar/ and/or heavy bassline and 'tribal' drumming.

As batcave and deathrock usually sounds!

I believe electronica is sadly somehow becoming the word for "whatever goes, I don't know how to call it" to a lot of people!

  • @kennycwhetstone I wont comment ont Crematory and Angtoria, but as far as goth metal goes, there are and were far more creative stuffs...

Try Type O Negative, or the first album, self titled, by The Bronx Casket co.

But if you wish to listen to goth, primitive one, to know what you're talking about..

Try Bauhaus, Joy division, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Alien Sex Fiend,

They were forging that style even before the term was coined!

Btw, Xmal is Batcave if you need a subcategory

  • @kennycwhetstone Sorry, but you've obviously no idea what you're talking about!

Angtoria and crematory are essentially metal, with goth overtones, goth metal if you wish!

Goth as a "style" largely predates these!

Let's not forget what is known as goth, was before labeled "positive punk" by some music journalists!

And this Xmal song is not reminiscent from the eighties, IT is from the eighties!

Their career spans from 80 to 88 or 89...

So much for new new wave....

  • @siouxsettewerks @siouxsettewerks more like electronica... punk is angry, even post punk... goth rock is more grungy with orchestrations. punk is like the sex pistols, goth is more like the songs by Angtoria or Crematory... this song here is to light, to poppy. sorry but it's just not hard enough or angry enough to be any of those genres. it's kinda reminiscent of new wave from the eighties... i think i would classify it as NEW new wave. sounds good though

  • @kennycwhetstone If it's not post-punk, and mainly of the goth kind at that, then what is it?

  • Jestem uzależniony od tego kawałka, no coś niesamowitego.....

  • awesome band but not punk, rock, or goth... still good though.

  • fantastic!!!

  • I bought this record about 5 years ago at a church rummage sale for 10 cents. It was still in the shrink wrap with the original price inked out. Always kinda liked it; never knew they were so famous-in an underground way! Sometimes it is good to flip through all those records. You never know what you will find. It was the price that sold me on the Xmal disc.
