I _almost_ did it one day. I ordered a red Zinfandel at a restaurant. The waitress was like «ohhh - we're sorry, but we're out of Zinfandel - but we'd have a really nice Merlot!» - I was VERY close to shout it out like Miles. But I don't think the waitress would've understood ;)

Actually, I'm pretty sure it's because Merlot is for pussies.

Its crazy to think how much this single line in a movie years ago changed the American wine industry and can still be felt today.

i wonder how many impressionable morons actually stopped drinking merlot based on the opinion of a movie character on a totally subjective topic

miles was portrayed SO MUCH differently in the book...in the book, he was witty, good looking, hilarious, even upbeat at times, singing karaoke...in the movie, he is a total downer...i guess that certain characters don't always translate well on screen so they have to be completely changed...the movie was good, for sure...but it definitely deviated from the book to such an extent that it was almost like an invention of a new character named miles

i too own the book...miles makes a point of saying that he dislikes merlot because it is easy to make, and there isn't much prejudice when it comes to selecting the grapes...unlike pinot which is much more difficult to make...it has been awhile since i've read the book, but i don't remember him saying anything about declining to drink merlot because it reminded him of his ex, especially considering that she was on his mind 24/7 anyways
